At the Alumni art exhibit I looked at "Pinchot Family's Long Pool at Grey Towers National Historic Site" by Peter Otis who graduated with the class of 1973. The first thing i noticed when looking at this picture was the deepness of the colors. The blues and greens were heavily saturated and there was a lot of contrast in the picture which was ultimately caught my attention at first glance when looking at it. This picture also reminds me of a place that I went to when I was in Spain which made it feel familiar to me which I enjoyed.
My eye was led through this picture by the beautiful pool which is strategically placed in the center of the photo. The pool leads you to notice the building in the back immediately which makes you think that the building has significant meaning. The red door in the center of the photo also makes you think that the building is important.
The pool also leads my eye to the worn out tracks on either side of the pool. From these walking paths you can tell that this is a spot that is well visited and that a lot of people go to his location to admire its beauty. The building and pool itself look like something out of a fairytale. It was surprising to me that this photo was taken in PA. It looks as though it was taken in a very wooded, unpopulated location.
I thoroughly enjoy this photo because of its dramatic color and the calmness that is brought upon me when looking at it. The photo seems very peaceful and the blues and greens make for a very tranquil color pallet. I think that the photographer wanted this sense of peace when he we taking this photo. I also really like the way this photo was printed and framed. The length of the print adds to how dramatic the pool looks in length.

This is the photo I took a picture of in my head, and then on my actual camera. This picture looks pretty spot on to what I thought it would look like. I feel as though all the colors are brought out the way I saw them in real life. I like that the stairs and the railings kind of lead your eye from the top of the frame to the bottom.

These were photos selected by myself and classmates that were favorites from the color theory assignment. My classmates really liked the one of the peppers and the one of the red berries. I also had the peppers in my top choice of photos. I think this particular picture was a favorite because of how vibrant the color red is. I also like how sharp the image came out, and how it shows the light reflecting on each vegetable. I also like the pop of green you get from the stems, you can't see all of them but it adds interest to the picture where they are seen. I also personally really like the tea kettle. My classmates had mentioned maybe the lighting could have been better in this photo, however I really like that the bottom of the kettle is much darker than the top. It shows a gradient of red and I think the lighting of this photo adds visual interest. I think that both my classmates and myself appreciated that I had a variety of shades of red in this activity and that all of my subject matter was very different from one another.

Larry Sultan
Los Angeles, Early Evening
1986
When i first looked at the 3 pictures we had to choose from for this assignment, my eye was immediately drawn to this one. The first thing I noticed was the intense contrast of the colors in this picture. The tree popped out first to me because of the lightness of the bark against the dark rich color green of the grass. The lines of the branches of the trees drew my eye into the picture, it led me to focus on the pink flower bush that pops against the white of the house and the ladder in front of it. The man in the window also very visibly stand out as he is standing in a window that is yellow, a different color than everything else in the picture and also a more dramatic harsh color than the softer colors featured in the yard, which makes him a focal point.

My first thought when I saw this photo was that it was showing the hard work of the man in the photo in the window. He is looking out into the yard which has been recently groomed as seen by the ladder and pieces of branches on the ground. I think that this photo is a good representation of showing calmness after a hard stressful day. The man is now relaxing and looking over the hard work he put in during the day.

Color Theory

I chose to shoot the color red. for me red indicates excitement, drama, noise, activity, and passion. Ultimately, I chose to shoot red because red is my favorite color!
